Abstract: Motivated by the increasing demand for storage density and high speed data retrieval in magnetic recording systems, we study signal detection approaches in recording channels with jitter noise. We jointly design optimum generalized partial response target and linear equalizer based on a new cost function which accounts for the data-dependent nature of jitter noise. A two-step post-processing approach is also presented to enhance the bit error rate performance with minor increase in computational complexity. Finally, we analyze the performance and design the key parameters of sliding block Viterbi detector for high speed data detection in magnetic recoding channels.
