Abstract: Compiled in 751, Kaifuso contains 116 Chinese poems written by 64 Japanese poets, which have remarkable similarities with Chinese works in the late Six Dynasties and early Tang Dynasty. This thesis attempts to make a comparison of Kaifuso and the works in Six Dynasties, in particular those in the Wen Xuan (Selections of Refined Literature). The results show that Kaifuso poets followed the rules of Chinese prosody strictly and their works are cast in the elegance style favored in the Six Dynasties. In some instances, they have blended some of the Japanese classical literature together with Chinese examples in their works, thus adding a unique flavor to the poems. In terms of thought, Kaifuso poets however were influenced more by Confucian tradition, instead of the Laozi and Zhuangzi philosophy highly held in the Six Dynasties.
