Abstract: A luminescent gold rectangle [(i?--PAnP)2(i?--bipy)2Au4](OTf)4 (1i??(OTf)4) (PAnP = 9,10-bis(diphenylphosphino)anthracene, bipy = 4,4a??-bipyridine, OTf = CF3SO3-) was synthesized and characterized. 1H NMR titrations and the X-ray crystal structures of the inclusion complexes (1i??An)i??(OTf)4, (1i??Br-An)i??(OTf)4 and (1i??Py)i??(OTf)4 show that 14+ forms 1 : 1 host-guest complexes with the electron-rich aromatic molecules. The binding constants were obtained both by NMR and fluorescent titration. Possible mechanisms of the quenching and the driving forces for the complexation are discussed. Six new silver phosphine complexes based on the PAnP ligand were isolated and structurally characterized. These include helical chains {[Ag(I?-PAnP)(CH3CN)][OTf]a??0.5CH3CN}n (1), {[Ag(I?-PAnP)(CH3CN)][ClO4]}n (2a) and {[Ag(I?-PAnP)(CH3CN)][PF6]}n (3a), the tetrameric [Ag(I?-PAnP)]4[ClO4]4a??4CH2Cl2 (2b), the dimeric [Ag(I?-PAnP)(CH3CN)2]2[PF6]2a??1.5Et2Oa??0.35CH2Cl2 (3b), and the trimeric [Ag(I?-PAnP)]3[BF4]3a??4Et2Oa??CH3OH (4). The complexes display rich exchange dynamics in solution. Efforts were made to understand the dynamic behavior.
