dc.description.abstract | In optical switching (OS) technologies, full wavelength conversion (FWC) is assumed to be available. In order to lower the cost of wavelength converters (WC) in an OS node, five Non-FWC architectures: PWC-only, CWC-SPF, CWC-SPN, TLWC-SPF and TLWC-SPN, are theoretically analyzed to obtain performance characterization and implementation cost. It is also noted that the TLWC-SPF/SPN are also new architectures never previously seen before.New and rigorous analytical works based on Markov chain analysis are also presented for these five Non-FWC architectures. The numerical results show that the PWC-only architecture has the worst saving percentage, while TLWC-SPF/SPN have the best saving percentage compared to FWC. Furthermore, the TLWC architecture can also save more on switch fabric. This leads to the conclusion that the TLWC architecture may be the most promising NFWC architecture for use in a cost-efficient OS node. | |
