dc.description.abstract | The Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM) process is a class of Rapid Prototyping (RP) technology. A common base material used in LOM is paper laminated with heat activated glue. A XY-table mounted laser cutter is used to trace and cut out the outlines of the object's cross-sections and cross-hatch a??extra-areasa?? for easy removal. Then more layers are applied with a heated roller and further laser cutting performed until a 3-dimensional prototype of the object is formed. However, the use of XY-table in the LOM process causes dimensional inaccuracy in it's end-product, especially those with sharp corners. This is due to the inability of the axes motors to overcome the effects of high moving inertia and system vibrations at the corners during high-speed operations. The project looks into development and implementation of path definition algorithm to solve such accuracy problem in a LOM machine. | |
