THE EFFECTS OF VALENCE AND SOURCE REPUTABILITY ON NEWS SHARING BEHAVIOURS ONLINE. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | This study investigated the effects of news valence and source reputability on two ratings of interest - online sharing behaviours and credibility judgements. 145 participants were asked to read 12 news articles that were of a negative, neutral or positive valence by a reputable and non-reputable news source. Following past research regarding the negativity bias, negative news was predicted to be rated as most credible and most likely to be shared by participants. Results showed an interaction effect between news valence and source reputability on credibility, as emotional news was rated as more credible. Although there was a preference for sharing negatively valenced news, when source reputability was taken into consideration, negative news was not more likely to be shared. Explanation for these results considered the use of familiarity heuristics in the conferring of credibility for emotional news and the interactions between news-sharers and their audiences. Findings from this study point to the need for research to look more closely at news characteristics that affect sharing. | URI: | http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/151573 |
