dc.description.abstract | Biosorption is a property of certain types of inactive, dead biomass to bind and concentrate heavy metals from even very dilute aqueous solutions. This work provided guidance for the development of potential biosorbents: 1>Sargassum sp. and Padina sp. showed highest potential as biosorbents out of four marine macroalgae; and lead, copper and cadmium were more susceptible to biosorption than zinc and nickel. 2>microscopic analysis revealed the chelating character of the ion coordination to carboxyl groups; and macroscopic experiments showed the major roles of ion exchange and adsorption in the biosorption process. 3>an equilibrium biosorption isotherm model based on ion exchange and adsorption was successfully applied to regress and predict experimental results for single and multiple metal systems. 4>a two-stage kinetic behavior was observed during biosorption processes which were represented well with a one-dimensional intraparticle diffusion rate model. 5>polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) showed good chemical and mechanical stabilities as immobilization matrice; however, it caused increase in the mass transfer resistance. | |
