Abstract: The uniformity of colour coating on pellets is difficult to determine owing to the small size of pellets. This project investigated the technique to determine colour uniformity on pellets by a newly developed spot colour measurement method. The CIE (Commission internationale de la????clairage) L*a*b* colour coordinates, colour difference and corresponding S.D. values obtained from spot colour measurements using a tristimulus colorimeter were employed for evaluating coat colour uniformity. Different measurement methods were studied. The area under the curve of S.D. a?? percent coat plot obtained from non-overlapping colour spots was found useful to assess the quality of pellet coat and coating efficiency. The measurement method developed enabled comparative evaluation of Wurster and precision coaters. Compared to the Wurster coater, the precision coater was found to be more efficient. This study illustrated the usefulness of the measurement method in evaluating the quality of pellet coatings and efficiency of pellet coaters.
