Abstract: Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and graft polymerization techniques have been employed for surface functionalization of silicon substrate and PTFE films. The technique makes possible molecular design of surface properties of silicon and dielectric polymer for specific applications. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and surface-initiated living free radical polymerization was successfully carried out on the hydrogen-terminated silicon surface. UV-induced graft polymerization was used for introducing functionalities on the inert PTFE films. Selective modification was carried out photolithographically or by using mask technique. The applications of the selectively functionalized silicon and dielectric polymer films include: selective metallization and adhesion enhancement of the electrolessly deposited copper on silicon and PTFE films, patterning conjugated polymer (polyaniline) on silicon, patterning polymer brush on silicon, patterning chromogenic materials (viologen) on PTFE films.
