Abstract: In this dissertation, we propose the study of algorithms and protocols for key management and anonymous secure routing in large ad hoc networks. Existing research efforts in key management can only handle very limited number of nodes and are vulnerable to active attacks. Therefore, one aim of this dissertation is to investigate scalable key management protocols for large ad hoc networks by exploiting hierarchical network structures, threshold digital signature schemes, and verifiable secret sharing techniques. Previous research in anonymous secure routing merely provides Weak Location Privacy and Route Anonymity. The other aim of this dissertation is to design routing protocols with strong anonymity properties without compromising the underlying security requirements. Furthermore, this dissertation systematically proposes and evaluates methods that might be able to improve the efficiency of anonymous routing protocols in ad hoc networks.
