Title: | Voicing poverty | Authors: | LIM YUN XIN | Keywords: | Multidimensional, Dynamic, Structually-Embedded, Gender-Specific, Experiences. | Issue Date: | 21-Nov-2005 | Citation: | LIM YUN XIN (2005-11-21). Voicing poverty. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Poverty is generally understudied in Singapore. In fact, it is a widespread belief that there are very little poor people around us. Where and when poverty is highlighted, it tends to be explained in terms of individual failings and weaknesses, rather than as consequences of how our society is structured, and how the economy operates to disproportionately disadvantage a group of people in almost every aspect of their lives. Poverty is made invisible by the apparent lack of social movements or lobby groups to advocate it as a political issue that deserves public attention and collective action. It is constructed to be a problem that the poor alone must struggle with, rather than as a socio-structural phenomenon that has roots in the inegalitarian distribution of resources and access to political power. | URI: | http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/14951 |
