Title: | A STUDY ON THE USE OF LIFEFORM DIVERSITY MEASURES IN THE ASSESSMENT OF CORAL REEFS | Authors: | TEO LIP HENG, STEVEN | Issue Date: | 1995 | Citation: | TEO LIP HENG, STEVEN (1995). A STUDY ON THE USE OF LIFEFORM DIVERSITY MEASURES IN THE ASSESSMENT OF CORAL REEFS. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | There has been no use oflifeform diversity indices in the assessment of coral reefs to date. This study examines if lifeform diversity are useful parameters in coral reef monitoring programmes. Eighteen diversity measures were calculated for the study. The relationships between the diversity measures were investigated. The relationships of the diversity measures, fish species richness, fish abundance and, live coral cover were investigated. The indices were compared with coral cover and among themselves as univariate parameters of reef condition. The indices are compared with multivariate analysis procedures as parameters of reef condition. Use of lifeform diversity indices is recommended in the assessment of reefs. Lifeform diversity indices which use all the lifeform categories have a close relationship with fish abundance whilst the species diversity indices do not Lifeform diversity indices have better univariate discrimination of sites than species diversity indices. When compared to multivariate procedures, use of lifeform diversity indices result in similar groupings. The use of the Chignon-Wiener and Simpson group of indices are preferable over the Berger-Parker group of indices. Indices which use all the lifeform categories are preferred. Indices which take percentage of cover as abundance are preferred over indices which take counts of occurrence as abundance. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/149467 |
