Abstract: A thorough numerical investigation of the laminar flow and heat transfer around a single circular cylinder was performed. Firstly, numerical investigations of the two-dimensional flow around a heated circular cylinder were carried out for the Reynolds number range normally encountered in near-wall hot-wire measurements. The results form the reference against which the subsequent computations with wall effects are compared.Secondly, a numerical study was carried out to obtain the near-wall measurement correction curve at the two extreme cases of isothermal and adiabatic wall conditions. It is found that wall unit Y+ and a second dimensionless parameter h0 (a?!h/D) are necessary to fully describe the overall near-wall correction curve. Thirdly, the thermal response of a hot wire in a fluctuating freestream flow was investigated. The results showed that for any fluctuating flow, a hot wire having been calibrated under imposed mean free stream condition could be used to measure it.
