dc.description.abstract | This research aims to bring the divine command theory to the test. In Genesis 22, God commands Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac as a burnt offering. This divine command gives rise to a dilemma: on the one hand, there is the religious duty to obey God, that is, to kill Isaac; but on the other, there is the moral obligation not to kill an innocent life. Characteristically such a moral dilemma has been a thorny issue within the theory, which has been accused of provoking religious violence that shatters a moral community. Yet I find Levinasa??s philosophy of ethics a promising approach to interpret the divine command in terms of an ethical exegesis of the narrative that heightens the otherness or alterity of the moral agents involved. Ultimately the teaching of the narrative awakens its readers to bear the responsibility for the othera??a face that demands my responsibility. | |
