Abstract: Magnetic hard disk drives are the most important devices for information storage. High density magnetic recording is achieved by flying the read/write head as close to disk surface as possible. On the other hand, keeping enough clearance between flying head and disk surface is important for the robustness of the disk drive. Therefore, it is of crucial importance to have precise flying height measurement. The author investigated the major factors affecting the accuracy of calibration and noticed that there are systematic problems in the calibration process. The calibration errors come from the limit of photodetector's cut-off frequency and the bandwidth of optical filter. Considerable work was carried out to explore solutions so as to improve the accuracy of the calibration process and minimize errors caused by both photodetector and optical filter bandwidth. A cut-off compensation method is proposed to compensate the error caused by the limited responding speed of the photodetector. An integral response method is proposed to compensate the bandwidth effects of the optical filter.
