ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | The thesis describes the numerical simulation and experimental investigation of flow structures within the pump impeller and the overall pump performance of six different types of centrifugal pumps that operate under design and off-design conditions at different rotational speeds. The corresponding pump performance data were obtained through a fully computerized pump test rig. A steady state, three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code was first formulated to simulate the single-phase flow between the impellers. Four eddy-viscosity turbulence models were tested and the effects of these turbulence models were investigated. Then the air/water two-phase flow through the centrifugal pump impeller was studied with the implemented Eulerian multiphase flow model. In the calculation for both single-phase and two-phase flow, the finite-volume method and unstructured grid systems were used. Comparison between the numerical and experimental results for the pump performance curves shows good agreement for various types of pumps over the entire flow range.
