Abstract: Asthma and allergic diseases are complex traits with a polygenic mode of inheritance. Genome wide scans of affected families in several populations and candidate gene analyses have implicated several susceptibility genes. A study on Singapore Chinese families with asthma showed linkage to a region on chromosome 5q31-33. This thesis focused on candidate genes found in this region. Association studies were carried out for genetic polymorphisms found in interleukins 12 and 13, and the CD14 gene. We hypothesized that polymorphisms found within these genes may play a role in disease susceptibility.
