In the present work, magnesium wrought alloys AZ31 and AZ61 will undergo uniaxial compression operations to establish their material properties and study the mechanism behind the forging process. Temperature is one of the vital aspects to be reviewed in this investigation, as these alloys exhibit poor deformation at low temperature. The stress-strain relation, strength coefficient and strain-hardening effect are also studied. Microstructure analysis showing various stages of grain formation is also carried out by the use of magnesium billets. Microstructural effect on deformation behavior, twinning and dynamic recrystallization are also studied. Finally, investigation on the effect of friction during compression is conducted with magnesium ring specimens. The rings are subjected to isothermal compression at various strains and then, friction calibration curves are plotted. The experimental results agree well with theoretical findings using slab analysis and FEA simulation (Finite Element Analysis).
