Abstract: This study investigates six vowel pairs and eight voiceless obstruents in emotional speech by educated speakers of Singapore English. The emotions examined are angry, sad, happy, and neutral. The main aims are to show how F0, intensity, duration, F1-F2, VOT, and FFT power spectral peak convey different emotions, to discover the relationship between vowel conflation and emotional expression, and to determine gender differences in emotional expression. The results reveal that F0 and intensity characteristics of vowels and consonants convey emotions effectively, and F1-F2 values of vowels shed light on the differing ways which both genders express emotions. Vowel conflation was shown to occur across all vowel pairs; but the results do not indicate any relationship between specific emotions and manners of conflation. Specific ways in which both genders differ in expressing emotions were also accounted for.
