Abstract: The focus of this study is on forest fires. This study investigates the feasibility of calculating subpixel fire area and fire temperature from atmospherically corrected MODIS satellite data. An area on the Earth's surface is seen as point when viewed by a sensor from space. When there is a fire burning on the Earth's surface, the area seen by the sensor is usually a combination of fire burning area and non fire burning area. The thermal radiation measured by the sensor is contributed by both of them. The thermal radiation measured by the sensor is complicated by atmospheric absorption and emission due to the gases in the atmosphere. In order to obtain the actual ground emission, atmospheric correction must be applied to the measured thermal data to correct for the atmospheric effects.
