Abstract: This study aimed to develop and psychometrically evaluate the Emotional Avoidance Metacognitions Scale (EAMS), a concise self-report measure of emotion metacognitions that predispose a person to emotional avoidance. In Phase 1 (N = 204), exploratory factor analyses suggested five factors, respectively tapping on beliefs that emotions are: non-beneficial, uncontrollable, shameful, harmful and irrational. In Phase 2 (N = 85), this solution was successfully replicated. Further, consistent with expectations, EAMS scores correlated with other measures of emotion metacognitions, emotional avoidance, experiential avoidance, and depression, but not with stress. Finally, the EAMS demonstrated adequate internal consistency reliability. Findings provide promising preliminary support for the validity of the EAMS.
