Abstract: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of an acute 7-week cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) on cognitive domains, functional outcomes and resting state brain activity. 50 participants were recruited and made up 3 groups: 18 patients with schizophrenia that participated in CRT, 17 patients with schizophrenia in the rehabilitation ward acting as active controls and 15 healthy controls. The CRT group received 32 sessions of computerised training over a 5-7 week period. There was a significant group x condition interaction on measures of general cognition and executive function. Post-hoc tests showed that the CRT group exhibited improvements in scores, but not for the active controls. Analyses of resting state data revealed significant group x condition interaction effects in the thalamus and superior frontal gyrus. Even with a small sample size, an acute CRT is shown to improve cognition, functional outcome and brain activity at rest.
