dc.description.abstract | This study evaluates the influence of pain and malingered pain on errors made during the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST; Grant & Berg, 1948), to assess the usefulness of the WCST as an indicator of malingering in the context of pain. Three indices of performance (perseverative errors, non-perseverative errors, and failure to maintain sets) were compared between 40 controls, 33 simulated malingerers, and 37 participants experiencing experimental cold pain. Compared to controls, the pain sample performed worse on all three indices but had the same error patterns. Performance of simulators were worse than the pain sample only on non-perseverative errors and failure to maintain sets, leading to a distinct error pattern dominated by non-perseverative errors. Overall, the WCST was found to be effective in accurately classifying malingered and honest responses. A regression model consisting of perseverative errors, failure to maintain sets, and percentage of nonperseverative errors had an overall classification rate of 78.6%, with a sensitivity of 75.8% and specificity of 81.1%. | |
