Negotiating the image of a new woman: Women intellectuals' group identity and the Funu Zhoukan (Women's Weekly) in the 1930s China. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | This thesis is a case study of journalistic discourses on the image of New Woman in Fun?? Zhoukan (Womena??s Weekly), the supplement of the Nationalist Party(GMD)'s official newspaper Zhongyang Ribao (Central Daily News) from 1935 to 1937. I argue that the construction of a a??new virtuous wife and good mothera?? image in this supplement reflected the group identity of women intellectuals as the new Chinese women: they perceived themselves to be better citizens than Shanghai modern girls and to be saviors of unenlightened women; they acted as spokespeople for the rest of Chinese women to petition the society and the GMD government for support; they further argued that the importance of being and supporting new Chinese women were integral parts of shaping a modern country. | URI: | http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/14713 |
