dc.description.abstract | Research on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among foreign domestic workers (FDWs) in Singapore is limited although they form a significant part of the workforce. The unique situation of FDWs and their frequent encounters with stressors during employment make them vulnerable to developing PTSD. This study examines the prevalence of PTSD symptoms, posttraumatic growth (PTG), and associated constructs of perceived social support and positive religious coping among 68 Filipino, Indonesian and Burmese FDWs who were abused by their employers. A comparison was made between 68 abused FDWs residing at a shelter and 52 FDWs in the control group, who were recruited from a community-based sample. Results indicate that 44.12% and 7.69% of abused and non-abused FDWs met screening criteria for PTSD, respectively. Exposure to pre-migration trauma did not increase PTSD symptom severity among abused FDWs. PTG was positively associated with PTSD and perceived social support, with positive religious coping acting as a mediator between social support and PTG for abused FDWs. Findings suggest that FDWs may benefit from initiatives and policies that provide them sufficient time to interact with support groups and religious communities, and prompt them to reflect and derive meaning from abusive experiences through psychoeducation about positive coping methods. | |
