dc.description.abstract | Empathy has been found to reduce the attribution of blame on victims and, to a small extent, transgressors (Kogut, 2011; Anastasia & Costa, 2004; Haegerich & Bottoms, 2000). In this study, we investigated if this effect of empathy for transgressors is modified by the character profile of the transgressor. To investigate this, a 2 × 3 between-participants design was conducted, where empathy and character profiles were manipulated, and blame judgments were measured. Results of this study revealed that empathy and character profiles had no effect on blame judgments. These findings suggest that blame judgments may be more objective than we perceive them to be, and that moral principles serve to guide blame judgments more than emotions. | |
