Abstract: The rapid progress in wireless communication is revolutionizing our daily life, while the necessity for highly compact devices such as antennas remains a challenge for sustaining the growth. The integration of antennas with metamaterials has been proposed as a potential approach for realizing miniaturized antennas. Though significant contribution for lowering the profile of the antenna has been demonstrated, mechanisms to simultaneously preserve the other performance characteristics remain a critical concern. This thesis proposes reliable methods to realize low-profile antennas with stable operation. The unit cell analysis methods for the proposed layouts forms the design guidelines of a finite metasurface for implementation in antennas. Metasurface integrated low-profile antennas with wide bandwidth, stable beamwidth and high aperture efficiency has been designed and experimentally evaluated. The ability of the metasurface to control incident wave and surface wave depending on the configuration of the surface is capable of meeting performance standards for future wireless communication systems.
