dc.description.abstract | This thesis aims to study the effect of poor self-assessed health (SAH) and specific chronic diseases on the labour supply of older individuals aged 50 and above. This is a relevant issue given the rapidly ageing population as well as rising prevalence of chronic diseases among the older population in Singapore. Using an instrumental variable (IV) approach to address issues of measurement error and endogeneity in the health variables, we found that poor SAH and chronic diseases significantly reduced older individuals’ average likelihood of working. We also identified the main mechanisms through which poor SAH and chronic diseases affect labour supply and found suggestive evidence of heterogeneity across older individuals of different sexes, housing types and occupation types. Altogether, our findings highlight the need for more measures which empower older individuals to contribute productively to the economy by overcoming the negative impact of poor health on their ability to work. | |
