Abstract: Short-term scheduling of single stage noncontinuous plants with parallel lines/units is considered with the release times for units, order due dates and sequence-dependent setup times. MILP models are developed for both batch and semicontinuous processes with one or multiple due dates using slot-based time representation. MILP models are also formulated using event-based approach to study the effect of decoupling on model performance. A comparison is drawn between the above two continuous-time formulations with a few examples. In addition, two models are proposed which accommodate multiple batches in single slot and reduce the binary variables and solution times. The effect of big-M on the performance of a model is also discussed. Finally, an application of our work is demonstrated for scheduling stepper machines with uncertainties in the photolithography station, one of the important processes in semiconductor manufacturing.
