Abstract: The organization and management of collaborative sessions have attracted attention from both commercial software developers and academia. However the research efforts in general tend to focus more on facilitating the collaborations in CAD fields without involving the integration of CAE capabilities. This thesis presents an internet-enabled distributed and collaborative framework to support not only CAD collaborations but also CAE collaborations, and discusses the mechanisms of collaborative session management and the synchronization issues that are of critical importance to collaboration efficiency. By leveraging workflow management system, a workflow-driven mechanism is introduced to organize collaborative sessions. A multi-threads synchronization scheme is proposed to realize efficiently synchronized engineering design and analysis. A case study relating to hard disk spindle motor is also presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework to provide reliable support to the product development process and the collaborative session management.
