Abstract: This report presents an analytical and experimental study of the behaviour of six externally prestressed composite beams, 3 simply supported on three supports and subjected to a two-point load while 3 simply-supported on two supports subjected to two-point and four-point load.The first configuration of continuous composite beams considered is nine metres long, prestressed by a series of high-strength steel tendons with a constant eccentricity from the top and bottom flanges, and attached to a concrete slab by shear connectors designed to ensure complete interaction. The second configuration of simply-supported composite beams considered is six metres long, prestressed by a series of tendons in different profiles. Using the bond reduction coefficient proposed by Naaman (1991b), design steps were formulated to study the elastic and post-yield behaviour of prestressing tendons subjected to positive and negative moment. The results showed that the bond reduction coefficient correlated fairly accurately with the stress change in the unbonded tendons in the elastic range. The experimental service and ultimate loads obtained from both tests matched those evaluated from design calculations.
