Abstract: The collagen-terpolymer microcapsule has been proved to successfully enhance the cellular function and has shown to have great potential in bioartificial liver and controlled release system. In this study, confocal microscope was used to characterize the mass transport properties of the microcapsule, whose data were then described by the first order and second order models. It was demonstrated that the models gave a nice description of diffusion properties of the microcapsule. Both FITC-BSA and FITC-dextran were chosen as our diffusing molecules of interest. It was discovered that collagen charges had a significant effect on diffusion properties. The influence of terpolymer concentration and collagen concentration on the membrane diffusivity was also examined.
