dc.description.abstract | Biotin-modified Au nanoparticles as a building block for surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy sensitivity improvements are synthesized and characterized and the mechanism is accordingly studied. UV and FTIR spectra show that biotin molecules coupled with the Au nanoparticles after exchanging reaction. The biotin-functionalized nanoparticles are then immobilized on substrates via biotin-streptavidin specific recognition. The self-assembled gold nanoparticles show much larger minimum reflectivity shifts of SPR than traditional biomolecule bindings. The improvements of SPR sensitivity are studied at I> = 543 nm, I> = 632.8 nm, and I> = 1152 nm, respectively. In order to study the underlying mechanism of SPR sensitivity enhancements by metallic nanoparticles, a theoretical model based on Maxwell-Garnett theory is proposed and thereafter the dielectric constants of the gold nanoparticles are calculated. The obtained values at three laser wavelengths explain well the SPR sensitivity enhancements by the gold nanoparticles. | |
