Abstract: Bone plates are used as one of the fixation methods to restore damaged bones in orthopaedic surgery. Conventional bone plates are mainly made of stainless-steel. However, high stiff stainless-steel plates induce bone absorption and occasionally a plated bone suffers osteoporosis. Hence, it is likely that an ideal bone plate should possess less stiffness. In this study, effort was first made on a micro-braiding fabrication method for continuous fiber reinforced carbon / polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites. Furthermore, this method was applied to fabricate carbon / PEEK composites bone plates reinforced with textile fabric preforms. As a result, it was found that the textile composite bone plates possess relatively low stiffness as compared with the stainless-steel plate. Based on the information of some previous clinical examinations, it can be concluded that the textile composite bone plates developed in this thesis showed various mechanical designs and a good candidate for bone plate fixation.
