Title: | EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL STUDY OF A SPRAY-ASSISTED LOW-TEMPERATURE DESALINATION SYSTEM | Authors: | CHEN QIAN | Keywords: | spray; low-temperature desalination;energy; Second-law; optimization; | Issue Date: | 24-Apr-2018 | Citation: | CHEN QIAN (2018-04-24). EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL STUDY OF A SPRAY-ASSISTED LOW-TEMPERATURE DESALINATION SYSTEM. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Desalination is the key technology to address the issues associated with global water deficit. Existing desalination technologies are facing the problems of high primary energy consumption and high initial investment cost. This thesis presents a spray-assisted low-temperature desalination technology, which potentially lowers the energy consumption and plant cost. A theoretical model was first developed for exploring heat and mass transfer inside the spray evaporator. Then experimental tests were carried out to validate the model and investigate the flash atomization effect in the evaporator. Subsequently, thermodynamic analyses were conducted for the multi-stage spray-assisted low-temperature desalination system to evaluate its energy efficiency and second-law efficiency. Finally, a multi-objective optimization based on 3E (energetic, environmental and economic) analysis was conducted to obtain optimal design and operation conditions. The obtained results enable fundamental understanding of the spray-assisted low-temperature desalination system and provide useful information for further optimizing the technology. | URI: | http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/145435 |
