Abstract: Linguistic landscape is a broad term which constitutes of all kinds of messages displayed on public signage that can be observed by everyone who happened to walk past it. There is often a distinction made between the official signs which are fully controlled by the state and government and the non-official signs which are controlled by private companies or individuals. In every country, the official signs tend conform to state ideology whereas the non-official signs may or may not be similar to the former depending on the type of regulations implemented on these private signs. This paper will be focusing on the private signs which are managed by hawker centre vendors. In Singapore, where are no laws and regulations that are implemented on private signs, individual owners have absolute control over their individual signboards. This led to an interesting sight in hawker centres whereby there are many variations in the languages and choice of words used. The data used for analyse will be based on first-hand field work, exploring 8 hawker centres with various backgrounds located in different areas in Singapore. From these data, this paper seeks to find out the extent of the language policy’s influence on the signboards as well as the other factors influencing the choice of words and languages found on the signboards.
