Abstract: WITH THE MATURING OF ELECTROWETTING-ON-DIELECTRIC (EWOD) TECHNOLOGY AS A MEANS FOR LIQUID MANIPULATION, RECENT RESEARCH EFFORTS HAVE SHIFTED FROM CONVENTIONAL PLANAR 2D DEVICES TO THE MORE COMPLEX 3D GEOMETRIES. CURRENT 3D EWOD DEVICES HAVE GAINED ATTRACTION FOR THEIR INCREASED FUNCTIONALITIES, HIGHER VOLUMETRIC CAPACITIES AND WIDER FIELD OF APPLICATIONS. WHILE THE FIELD HAS SEEN SIGNIFICANT GROWTH, CURRENT FABRICATION METHODS COULD PROVE TO BE A SERIOUS BOTTLENECK IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF DEVICES THAT ARE LARGELY MORE COMPLEX. IN THIS THESIS, A SIMPLE SINGLE STEP DIP-COATING METHOD IS DEVELOPED USING A HIGH CAPACITANCE ION GELS TO PROVIDE FUNCTIONAL DIELECTRIC LAYERS FOR EWOD. FURTHERMORE, THIS METHOD IS USED FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE LIQUID PRISMS USING A NEW STACKED CONFIGURATION FOR IMPROVED BEAM STEERING.
