Abstract: COMMUNICATION BETWEEN STEM CELLS AND THEIR NICHE IS CRUCIAL AND SOPHISTICATED. THE CELL FATES OF STEM CELLS ARE DETERMINED BY NICHE ACTIVITIES. IN FEMALE DROSOPHILA ADULT GERMARIUM, NICHE-ASSOCIATED DECAPENTAPLEGIC (DPP) IS THE PRIMARY MORPHOGEN TO CONTROL GERMLINE STEM CELL. HOWEVER, THE PRESENT UNDERSTANDING OF DPP SIGNALING ACTIVITIES IN GERMARIUM IS LIMITED. IN MY STUDY, I ADDRESSED THE DIRECT TRANSCRIPTIONAL REGULATION OF DPP VIA EN/CBP COMPLEX AND CAP-CELL SPECIFIC CIS-REGULATORY ELEMENT IN THE MAJOR DPP LIGANDS SOURCE, CAP CELLS. SECOND, MY STUDY REVEALED A NOVEL DISPERSAL MECHANISM TO RESTRICT DPP DISTRIBUTION IN SHORT RANGE VIA DPP TYPE I RECEPTOR, TKV, IN ESCORT CELLS. LASTLY, LOW LEVEL OF DPP FUNCTIONS TO MEDIATE GERM CELLS DEDIFFERENTIATION POTENCY WAS PROPOSED. TAKEN TOGETHER, MY STUDIES PROVIDES A BIG PICTURE OF DPP SIGNALING WORKING MODEL IN DROSOPHILA FEMALE GERMARIUM.
