Abstract: Many interval type-2 fuzzy logic controllers (IT2-FLCs) reported in the literature are black box systems designed using optimisation techniques. There is limited understanding of how changes in the parameters of the IT2 FLCs affect the control performance. This thesis seeks to analyse the characteristics and performance of IT2 fuzzy PI controllers (IT2-F-PICs) with different footprint of uncertainty (FOU) shapes. First, the analytical structures of IT2 FLCs with three types of symmetrical antecedent IT2 fuzzy sets are derived and used to identify differences in their control performances. The analysis results are used to proposed rule of thumb design guideline. Finally, analytical structure for IT2-F-PIC with non-symmetrical antecedent sets is analysed in order to understand how independent variation of FOU size affects control response. The results in this thesis is a step that enables control designers to quickly set-up IT2-F-PICs and to adjust the FOU size to meet basic control requirements.
