Abstract: My thesis contributes to research on personal initiative in entrepreneurship. In Chapter 2, I draw on personal initiative and institutional theories to develop an integrative framework that explains how formal status leads to firm growth. By testing the model with 190 entrepreneurs in Zimbabwe, the results demonstrate that available resources mediate the effect of personal initiative and formal status on firm growth. Further, the indirect effect of formal status on firm growth via available resources is strongest when entrepreneurs show high personal initiative. In Chapter 3, I advance the effect of personal initiative to influencing team members’ innovative behavior. Based on 80 business ventures in Indonesia and 35 entrepreneurial firms in Singapore, I found that lead entrepreneurs (i.e. CEO) high in personal initiative are rated by team members to provide more developmental feedback, which in turn stimulates their innovative behaviour. Further, the indirect effect of personal initiative on team members’ innovative behaviour via developmental feedback is highest when team members affectively trust their lead entrepreneur. Altogether, my dissertation contributes to the personal initiative literature by accounting for the interplay of personal initiative and formal status on firm growth, and documenting the trickling down effect of personal initiative.
