dc.description.abstract | Ostracods are bivalved micro-crustaceans found in both marine and non-marine ecosystems. They are important tools for paleoenvironmental studies through the geochemical analysis of fossilised valves. With the advent of global warming and climate change, it has become all the more important to gain greater understanding of environmental changes, by studying past climate change, and ostracods are one such avenue. However, there is a lack of research into the diversity, distribution and ecology of ostracod fauna, particularly in the Oriental region. Although ostracods have been found in Singapore before, it is unknown whether they have become locally extinct or not. Therefore, this study aimed to find out if freshwater ostracods are still present in Singapore, and if so, identify and describe their ecology and distribution. Through this study, 14 genera have been found in 27 sampling sites. They mainly are from the superfamily Cypridoidea, with Physocypria and Strandesia being two most common genera found. Although this study had a limited number of sites, there was still a wide variety of ostracod genera found, showing that the biodiversity of ostracods in Singapore could be rather high. The distribution of the genera was varied – some were widely distributed, while others were more localised, and this is postulated to be due to the mechanisms of dispersal. Also, the physical parameters of the water are shown to be important in determining the type of species present, their size as well as their abundance. However, more research needs to be conducted to further prove these arguments. Following this preliminary study, more in-depth, comprehensive research should be done to identify the ostracods to species level, as well as to obtain a more accurate representation of the freshwater bodies in Singapore. | |
