Abstract: Popular geopolitics has always been concerned with geopolitical representation and discourse, thus the study of the nexus between mass media and popular culture. Practical reasoning frames media coverage of international politics, and in states where governments have dominant control over media outlets, power is with the state to shape geopolitical imaginations. With terrorism now a huge focus of national security, this thesis seeks to investigate the ideas and practices of security within discourses and representations of terrorism in Singapore. Using discourse analysis, I uncover Singapore’s conceptions and practices of security within terrorism through the main national newspaper The Straits Times (ST), and expose the techniques of representation used by ST through the concept of framing. Consequently, positioning this paper within the literature shift towards audience consumption and interpretation, audience research will be conducted to explore audience’s making of geopolitical meanings as they consume popular culture and texts. This is in part a recognition of power and agency of the active audience where insights of the embodiment of these discursive realms of security and terrorism in the everyday can be understood. In all, this thesis explores the complexities of securities within and across scales, where it encounters a paradox.
