dc.description.abstract | This paper extends Mortensen (1986) to exam the effect of unemployment insurance (UI) on unemployment duration (UD) by relaxing two assumptions. The first one is that job arrival rate depends on search cost; the other one is that search cost is endogenously determined to maximize value of unemployment. The model predicts that UI can support the unemployed with limited financial resources to search job and thus reduce their UD. Individual asset is used as a proxy for personal financial resources. Using data extracted from US National Longitude Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79), I estimate the transition rate from unemployment to employment both parametrically and semi-parametrically. The empirical estimation results confirm the theoretical results. | |
