dc.description.abstract | Bioresorbable 3D scaffolds have special applications in tissue engineering. A desktop rapid prototyping (RP) system has been developed to fabricate scaffolds for tissue engineering (TE) applications. The system is a computer-controlled four-axis machine with a multiple-dispenser head. The building of the scaffolds with the desktop RP system is described based on the sequential dispensing of chitosan hydrogel formed by dissolved in acetic acid and sodium hydroxide solution. Neutralization of the acetic acid by the sodium hydroxide results in a precipitate to form a gel-like chitosan strand. An example of fabrication of a freeform hydrogel scaffolds is demonstrated. The required geometric data for the freeform scaffold were obtained from CT-scan images and its dispensing path control data were converted form its volume model. Characterization experiments show suitable structure as well as cell compatibility and attachment of the chitosan scaffolds, which indicate good potential for tissue engineering applications. | |
