Abstract: With globalisation, there are increasingly more businesses that are carried out in international contexts. These are transnational entrepreneurs that partake in entrepreneurial processes transcending multiple national spaces (Yeung, 2009). Based on case studies of Mainland Chinese entrepreneurs in Singapore’s Food and Beverage industry, this thesis examines the role of the entrepreneur in organising their business in transnational contexts. Using a relational economic geography approach with Whitley’s (1992) business systems concept as a starting point, it is posited that the role of the entrepreneur and the transnational networks of institutions and social actors that they are enrolled in are significant in understanding these businesses. Through in-depth interviews supplemented with secondary data, I analyse five different entrepreneurial resources and endowments of the Mainland Chinese entrepreneurs. I argue that these entrepreneurs enrolled in transnational networks bring different characteristics of entrepreneurship from Mainland China which intersect with Singaporean institutions. While staying largely Mainland Chinese, their business organisation are heavily influenced by Singaporean institutions that both enable and constrain their entrepreneurial venture. In so doing, these entrepreneurs create new spaces of entrepreneurship which adds dynamism to the Small and Medium Enterprises sector in the Food and Beverage industry of Singapore.
