Abstract: The performance of polyelectrolyte enhanced ultrafiltration process (PEUF) was studied for the removal of Cd(II) from aqueous solutions using two polysulfone hollow fiber membranes with different pore sizes. Among the different polyelectrolytes tested, polyethyleneimine (PEI) was found to be the most effective polyelectrolyte used for the complex formation with Cd(II). Almost complete removal of Cd(II) could be resulted under the optimum conditions (at pH of 6 and loading factor of 10). Pore size of membrane reflects negligible effect on the Cd(II) removal, but it affects the permeation flux. PEI was satisfactorily regenerated and 97.3% of Cd(II) was recovered by decomplexation of PEI-Cd(II) complex at pH 2. Concentration polarization and membrane fouling are insignificant under the experimental conditions employed in the PEUF process.
