Security in A Globalised World - 20th Century Wars and Their Relevance

Abstract

Global security today is largely dependent on Regional organisations and their security apparatus. This shift brings about major questions concerning the viability and sustainability of Regional Organisations. The European Union is seen by many to be the most successful Regional Organisation, and the European model is followed by others like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and the African Union. Therefore to understand the future of regional security and global security, one must examine the formation of the European Union. When the scope is narrowed, one finds that the EU is influenced greatly by the wars of the 20th century, the results of which directly impacted European unity and integration. The experience of the European Union thus brings up a key lesson for all other Regional Organisation: Regional integration cannot and must not be rushed.
