Abstract: This thesis focuses on the synthesis, characterization, and Li-ion battery application study of a few supported and unsupported nanoscale Sn-based materials. Different chemical methods of preparation were used to produce supported and unsupported SnO2 and Sn nanoparticles, hollow SnO2 nanoparticles, solid and hollow SnO2 nanocubes, Sn-SnO2 core-shell nanocubes, straight SnO2 nanorods and V-shaped SnO2 nanorods. Most of the prepared materials particularly graphite supported SnO2 or Sn nanoparticles supported on graphite, and unsupported straight SnO2 nanorods, have shown very satisfactory performance for a Sn based anode material.
