COGNITIVE-PROCESSING AND VERBAL EXPRESSION OF EMOTIONAL INFORMATION IN CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | There are mixed findings on emotional language deficits in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), compared to typically-developing children. These are partly attributable to methodological differences in existing studies, as well as the use of experimental stimuli that fails to separate emotional-processing deficits from characteristic social-processing impairments in children with ASD. The aim of this thesis was to examine the independent effects of emotional and social information on emotional-processing, indexed by emotional language production, in children with ASD. First, common problems in the literature regarding participant heterogeneity and task demands were highlighted. Next, a set of social/emotional pictures standardized on valence, intensity, and social engagement, was developed. Finally, the main study investigated the effects of valence and social engagement on emotional terms produced in picture-descriptions, by children with ASD and case-matched typically-developing children. The findings have theoretical implications and practical considerations for future work on emotional processing in ASD. | URI: | http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/143401 |
