Abstract: THE STUDY IS TO FIRST DEVELOP A NOVEL ZIRCONIUM/PVA MODIFIED FLAT-SHEET PVDF MEMBRANE FOR AN EFFECTIVE REMOVAL OF ARSENIC AND PHOSPHATE. IT IS FOUND THAT THE CHEMICAL MODIFICATION RESULTS IN A COATING LAYER ON THE MEMBRANE, WHICH SLIGHTLY DECREASES THE FLUX OF THE MEMBRANE WHILE IT ENHANCES THE HYDROPHILICITY OF MEMBRANE. AT THE OPTIMAL PH 2.0, THE ADSORPTION CAPACITIES ARE AS HIGH AS 128, 73, 38 AND 78 MG/G FOR ARSENATE, MONOMETHYLARSONIC ACID, DIMETHYLARSINIC ACID AND PHOSPHATE, RESPECTIVELY. THE SAID MEMBRANE IS FURTHER MODIFIED BY PHOSPHATE FOR ENHANCEMENT IN REMOVAL OF LEAD AND COPPER. AT THE OPTIMAL PH 5.5, THE ADSORPTION CAPACITIES ARE 121 AND 40 MG/G FOR LEAD AND COPPER, RESPECTIVELY. THE ION EXCHANGE BETWEEN CHLORIDE ON THE MEMBRANE AND ARSENIC OR PHOSPHATE IS INVOLVED IN THE ADSORPTION PROCESS; THE HYDROXYL GROUPS FROM THE PHOSPHATE IONS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ENHANCEMENT IN ADSORPTION OF LEAD AND COPPER.
